1 person killed in crash on U.S. 40 involving law enforcement pursuit (updated) - The Park Record
A small sports car rolled several times on U.S. 40 Wednesday morning, killing one passenger and leaving the other in critical condition, officials said. The accident was related to a chase involving law enforcement officers, officials said.
The Park City Fire District responded to the scene shortly before 10:30 a.m. and found the sports car near the Silver Summit exit with extensive damage, according to Battalion Chief Darren Nelson. It had been traveling northbound on U.S. 40, he said.
Medical personnel pronounced one victim dead at the scene. The other was flown via helicopter to a hospital in the Salt Lake Valley.
No details were immediately available about what prompted the chase or caused the crash.
Nelson said it appeared the vehicle had rolled several times and that the male driver and a female passenger were not wearing seatbelts and were ejected from the vehicle.
Summit County Sheriff’s Lt. Andrew Wright said the crash was related to a pursuit out of Wasatch County.
A Utah Highway Patrol spokesperson said at least one trooper worked to deploy spike strips, but did not say whether the vehicle’s tires were punctured. Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Heber City Police Department officers were also involved, he said.
The Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to a request for additional details, while the Heber City Police Department referred inquiries to the Utah Attorney General’s Office, which was taking over the investigation.
The northbound lanes of U.S. 40 were closed shortly after the crash and traffic was diverted to the Silver Summit exit.
The Utah Department of Transportation estimated the backup would be cleared at 4 p.m.
