A new law allowing courts to hold bond hearings on weekends - WesternSlopeNow

Legal office of lawyers, justice and law concept

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo (KREX) — Weekend court is about to become a new concept for the Mesa County Justice Center. Last year, the Colorado legislature passed a bill, “The 48 hour” that requires local governments to hold bond hearings within 48 hours of a person being booked into custody.

Colorado and many other states are transitioning to this method. The new system will have a bond hearing officer from a different jurisdiction that will appear by video and will set bonds.

This weekend was the first test run for District Attorney, Dan Rubinstein, and his office. He says his office’s first priority is always to serve justice in the community, “it’s our job to do justice, and having someone sit in custody over the weekend who’s eligible for a PR bond is not justice. People are probably thinking, oh these are people who are arrested, why should we care that much about them. These are people who haven’t been convicted of anything yet and we’re just setting bond and bond conditions, so we can get through a trial. We need to be fair and do the right thing. While it will take some more work, it’s ultimately the right thing to do,” says Rubinstein.

The new law will go into effect on April 1st.
