COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - Muscogee County Sheriff Greg Countryman confirms one of his deputies was shot around 3:45 p.m. Saturday on Andrews Road in Columbus.
Authorities say the deputy came in contact with a suspect vehicle as Columbus police were chasing it. The vehicle allegedly struck the deputy’s vehicle and began firing shots.
According to the sheriff, a suspect opened fire on the deputy multiple times. The deputy then returned fire on the suspect vehicle, authorities say.
The deputy was wounded in the incident and the unmarked Muscogee County sheriff’s vehicle sustained bullet holes.
Four people were inside the suspect’s vehicle, according to Sheriff Countryman. One suspect was wounded when the deputy fired his weapon at the vehicle. That person’s condition unknown.
The injured suspect and two others from the vehicle are in custody. Authorities say the fourth person got away from the scene.
Columbus police assisted in capturing the two uninjured suspects.
Sheriff Countryman tells News Leader 9 the deputy is being treated at a local hospital and is expected to survive.
