Alabama law enforcement gather to support each other in times of need - WDHN

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) —The Alabama Law Enforcement Alliance for Peer Support, or A.L.L.E.A.P.S., is an initiative that uses first responders to provide support for fellow first responders in times of traumatic circumstances.

Law enforcement from all over the state will gather at Harvest Church in Dothan on Monday and Tuesday for the 5th Annual A.L.L.E.A.P.S. conference, which will provide training in peer support.

Guest speaker Lt. Brian Murphy, will lead the training and share his experience as an officer who was shot 15 times in the line of duty.

“Doing what I do and dealing with people who have been shot in the line of duty, the first thing they always say is they feel like they are on an island,” Lt. Murphy said. “Nobody fully understands them. But having a program like A.L.L.E.A.P.S. where you do have people who have been through training, know what to do, know what to say, that’s where you get not only the officer back, but you get their family back.”

The attendance at the conference continues to grow every year, and this year over 300 officers plan to attend.
