Alabama law enforcement seized $11.4 million in 2020-2021 - NBC 15 WPMI

MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) — The 2021 fiscal year Asset Forfeiture Report from the State of Alabama shows there was a 45% increase this year in cash seizures by law enforcement agencies across the state.
In 2020, $7,861,365 was seized in Alabama, itself a 61% increase over 2019’s $4,881,016.
State agencies, which include Police Departments, Sheriff’s Departments, Task Forces and the Courts, filed 1,667 forfeiture cases in 2020 statewide. Those cases resulted in the seizure of $11,454,037 in cash with $4,331,175 of that already being forfeited.
Asset forfeiture is a process law enforcement uses to confiscate property they believe to be connected to illegal activity. Once the property is seized, it is the burden of the owner to prove that the property was not connected to criminal activity.
That process can often times cost more in time and legal expenses than the property, or cash, is worth.
The report also shows that statewide, 877 firearms were seized.
The Mobile Police Department seized 154 firearms, or 17% of all firearms seized statewide.
In 2019, The Alabama Legislature passed the Alabama Forfeiture Information Reporting Act to provide transparency into the process.
