Albany, NY (WRGB) — Albany lawmakers discuss a law that would bring major changes to the city's police department.

Local Law C would create a new commission that would oversee the police and a new public safety department.

The commission would be made up of nine members- five picked by the Albany Common Council, and the rest by the mayor's office.

The law was not put to a vote- but there was a lot of back and forth between representatives of the police union, and the common council members.

One point of contention- the cost!

The President of the Albany police supervisors association, LT. Josiah Jones says creating the new entities- would mean more salaries that would get passed along to taxpayers.

The common council president though disagreed.

"Just conservatively, this would have to cost the taxpayers millions maybe tens of millions annually"
"That's all rhetoric. At the end of this we will see what the cost will be and I don't think the taxpayer will have to worry as much about that" said Corey Ellis, President of the Albany Common Council

The two did agree the law needs more work- especially when it comes to the transparency of the commission- and the qualifications, of the people on it.

There's still a lot to be hammered out in local law c- as both sides are saying.

The common council will hold a series of meetings on the issue in the coming months.
