MOBILE, AL. (WPMI) — Friday it will become legal in Alabama for alcohol to be delivered to your home, but the Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board says it will likely be weeks before people actually start receiving those deliveries. The ABC Board says it's still processing applications so licenses can be issued, and it will likely be late October or early November before people can get shipments.

"I think we'll really see the popularity of it, especially with Grocery shoppers," said ABC Board spokesperson Daniel Dye. "We hope a lot of people take advantage of it. It's great for business to offer features such as this."

Dye says there will be limits on how much you can have delivered in a day. The limit is 12 standard size bottles of wine, 12 standard size bottles of liquor and five cases of beer. Dye says there will be restrictions in place to make sure alcohol isn't being delivered to minors. Dye says the delivery person will be tasked with scanning the customer's ID.

"Part of the reason for the scan is the ABC Board can go back and audit those deliveries and make sure that the delivery drivers are delivering to people who are 21 and older," said Dye.

Dye says not only will the department be auditing those records, they'll also be conducting random compliance checks in the field.

"For anybody who is delivering alcohol, you know, we do plan on having checks," said Dye. "We just want our delivery licensees to, you know, play by the rules and keep you know, this harmful substance out of the hands of minors."

A separate wine shipment law went into effect in August. That allows wine producers from out of state to apply for a license to deliver to your home.

We reached out to popular grocery delivery apps Shipt and Instacart for comment.

"We’re thrilled to soon expand alcohol delivery to our home state of Alabama, bringing more convenience for customers, expanding work opportunities for shoppers, and driving business for retailers across the state. Consumers in more than 20 states count on Shipt for alcohol delivery – and soon consumers in Alabama will be able to count on Shipt for delivery of their beer, wine, and spirits too. We’ll be formally applying for an alcohol delivery permit once the law goes into effect, so stay tuned for details on launch," said Shipt in an emailed statement.

Instacart says it will be sharing details about alcohol delivery in the coming months. Right now, it says it offers same-day pickup of alcohol in partnership with The Fresh Market, Publix and ALDI in Alabama.
