Area law firm gifts Mizzou journalism and law students $1 million in scholarships - Kansas City Business Journal - Kansas City Business Journal

Stueve Siegel Hanson LLP has gifted the University of Missouri two $500,000 scholarship funds for Black law students and future journalists.

According to a Monday release, the firm established the Stueve Siegel Hanson Law Scholarship for Black or African American Students at the University of Missouri School of Law and the Stueve Siegel Hanson Fund for Press Freedom supports the Alfred Friendly Press Partners and the Missouri School of Journalism.

In June, Stueve Siegel Hanson donated an additional $1 million to establish a similar scholarship for Black students and the University of Kansas School of Law.

“We want to be an agent of positive change in the legal system,” firm Co-founder Patrick Stueve said in the release. “It is critical that we support diverse legal minds to serve as our next generation of attorneys, advocates, judges and legislators, and it is critical that we support journalists who can bring transparency and accountability to governments around the world.”

One-quarter of Stueve Siegel Hanson’s lawyers earned their bachelor’s degrees or juris doctorates at the University of Missouri. The scholarships help provide a meaningful commemoration of the firm’s 20th anniversary, Co-founder Norman Siegel added.

“Achieving ‘Justice for All’ is not possible without action, especially from those of us who have succeeded in law,” Siegel said. “We are honored to be able to invest in a more diverse and accountable legal system, and we hope other law firms will join us in this pursuit.”

Stueve Siegel Hanson, which has 24 local attorneys, has won cases such as the $34 million class-action against State Farm Life Insurance in Missouri. The case involved undisclosed fees within life insurance policies.
