Asking law enforcement, elections officials for commitment to fair election - CBS19 News
RICHMOND, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Ahead of the general election on Tuesday, Attorney General Mark Herring has asked law enforcement agencies and elections officials to commit to keeping the election safe and fair.
He sent a letter to officials on Friday asking for this commitment and to provide an update regarding laws, resources and tools the officials can use to ensure a safe and comfortable voting experience for Virginians.
“It’s so important for elections officials and law enforcement officers to have an understanding of the most updated protections in place to keep Virginia voters safe. Every single Virginian should feel comfortable while they are voting, whether they choose to vote in person early or on Election Day,” said Herring. “Last year, my team and I worked hard to ensure that Virginia’s election was fair, free, and safe, and we have done the same this year. Voter harassment and intimidation go against the very founding principles of democracy and will never be tolerated in the Commonwealth.”
There are several recent changes that have been made to voter protections, such as the expansion of a prohibition on firearms at polling locations banning them within 40 feet of a building that is being used as a polling location while the polls are open and ballots are being counted.
Herring has also recently issued an opinion regarding state and federal laws against voter intimidation and harassment.
Last year's presidential election saw record voter turnout across Virginia, including in early and absentee voting.
This year's election, which includes the races for governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general and all of the seats in the House of Delegates, takes place Tuesday.
