COLUMBIA. S.C. (WACH) – A controversial plan that banning transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports is now on its way to Governor McMaster’s desk to be signed into law.

Opponents say the so called ‘Save Women’s Sports Act’ is an attack on the trans community.

“These lawmakers are sending a clear message to trans youth that they don’t care about them, as humans, as their constituents, as people who they are elected to protect,” said Ivy Hill of the SC United for Iustice and Equality Coalition.

Hill and others who oppose ‘Save Women’s Sports Act’ call the plan a targeted attack on an already vulnerable population. It would ban transgender girls and women from competing in girls’ and women’s’ sports in the state. There are an estimated 35,000 transgender people in South Carolina.

“We’re talking about a segment of the population that already has elevated rates of depression, anxiety and attempted suicide. Spending time to further isolate these kids is really egregious,” said Hill.

“You can’t do enough hormone replacement therapy or testing to ensure equality of men and women in a highly competitive physical sport,” said state senator Josh Kimbrell.

Senator Kimbrell says the decision to push the proposal forward comes after some were outraged over Lia Thomas, the transgender swimmer in Pennsylvania that was allowed to compete and dominated the NCAA championships.

“This is truly an issue about title 9,” said Kimbrell. “Title 9 ensures equal opportunities, particularly when it comes to sports activities for women and men at the collegiate level.”

Wynston Sanders and other LGBTQ advocates, who’ve fought against passing the legislation for more than two years, vow to never stop fighting for representation and visibility.

“It’s basic human rights anyone born in this vessel should have,” said Sanders. “it should be something that just is because we’re here and we exist.”
