BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - BAYROC, or the “Bay Real-Time Operation Center,” helped officers find criminals quickly after violence broke out in Panama City Beach on March 27.
Their ability to make more than 160 arrests wouldn’t be as effective without BAYROC, which is located in the Bay County Sheriff’s Office.
“Well it was instrumental this weekend with the situation we had out on the beach in that we had a lot of chaos,” Bay County Sheriff Tommy Ford said. “And so in the crime center, they were able to view the cameras and license plate readers. We gathered intelligence on individuals we knew would be coming to Bay County for this event that had gang ties, had violent crime ties, and we felt were gonna be a problem.”
BAYROC consists of multiple camera systems which vary from traffic lights to license plate readers.
“But it all feeds into the BAYROC and gives us a common operating picture for what’s going on throughout the county,” Sheriff Ford said.
It continues to impress Sheriff Ford every day despite it being pretty new.
“It has been amazing so far,” Sheriff Ford emphasized. “It’s a leap forward in technology with law enforcement and some of the success stories we’ve had already, even though we’re in a testing phase, have really been amazing.”
One of those success stories includes Panama City Beach Police’s ability to apprehend the suspect who is accused of hitting and killing a 4-year-old girl on March 29th.
“So with the assistance with the Bay County Sheriff’s Office, Florida Highway Patrol, Panama City Police Department, we were able to develop leads and with the utilization of technology from our real-time crime center, identify a suspect,” Panama City Beach Police Chief J.R. Talamantez said.
Law enforcement is looking forward to what BAYROC can help them accomplish in the future.
The FLIR camera system used on their helicopters is a recent addition to the operation.
Sheriff Ford said the crime center will expand at some point and include analysts from different agencies who will be utilized in tracking down criminals.
