BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. (WTGS) — Beaufort County law enforcement held a community meeting at Battery Creek High School to discuss an uptick in gun violence in the Burton area.

Just last week, a shooting less than a mile away from the school left one man dead.

Valeria Richardson lost her son to gun violence. Now, she said she is concerned for other mothers in the area.

“We’ve got drug dealers in our school zones,” said Richardson. “So, our children are not safe, our teachers are not safe. So, we’ve got to do something to stop the violence.”

Sheriff P.J. Tanner said the solution needs to start with the community.

“Be a part of the process, Be a part of the solution,” Tanner said. “Don’t be part of the problem, and part of the problem is not talking," Tanner said.

Tanner added that community members often choose not to report crimes because they fear retaliation, but he encourages residents to contact CrimeStoppers if they want to share information about a crime anonymously.
