SAN ANTONIO - Fighting violent crime on the far west side.

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar is stepping up law enforcement presence outside Loop 1604 in response to recent shootings.

News 4’s Joe Galli is here for you with the temporary solutions the sheriff is coming up with and what you could expect to see in your neighborhood.

This mobile command unit is typically brought out for large-scale, long-term investigations or major emergencies. With recent several recent shootings here on the west side, it’s now being deployed as a temporary substation.

“You have your regular Vape pens with cartridges in the like," says Cameron Morehouse.

Cameron Morehouse works at Rough Country Vape and Smoke on Potranco. The Bexar County Sheriff’s mobile command unit is parked right outside.

It’s the perfect deterrent to keep people from breaking into this business.

“Within the last month or so there has been a bit of unwanted crime, I mean what crime is wanted?" asks Morehouse.

Morehouse also lives down the road where there have been multiple shootings recently.

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar says, “It’s just us being proactive in the area.”

The temporary substation is being used by deputies on patrol and also by detectives investigating recent shootings.

“We will be treating it as a substation and you’ll be seeing uniform deputies coming in and out of there and you might see intelligence units coming in and out of there and patrol cars and you’ll see a heavier presence," says Sheriff Salazar.

The sheriff says people driving by should not see the temporary substation as a call for alarm - and there’s no active gunman on the loose in the area.

Salazar anticipates the mobile unit to only be parked here for a few more days.
