Every few months, Big Rapids Police Department hosts their ‘Coffee With A Cop’ event. It focuses on closing the gap between local law enforcement and people in the community.
“It’s really important for community to know their police officers,” said Fred Guenther, Mayor of Big Rapids. “This is why they do it, so you get to know and talk to them, chat with them. The stronger the police department, the stronger the city.”
Officer William Sell said it gives community members a chance to get to know their law enforcement more personally.
“We’re a small agency, and I think it’s good that they can get out and actually speak with us,” he said. “Not just see us in a car driving by.”
Every ‘Coffee With A Cup’ location changes. They take place at different small businesses across Big Rapids. This month’s event took place at The Yellow Window & Little Brown Sack Deli.
“My Dad used to be a police officer here for 20 years,” said Tammy Spring, owner of The Yellow Window & Little Brown Sack Deli. “It helps people realize that these guys are not that scary. They are genuine people just like us.”
The overall goal is to connect with the community. Officer Sell said people can also bring any concerns they may have. The next event is June 10 at ArtWorks in Big Rapids.
