'Bigs in Blues'program gives students positive experience with law enforcement - WHP Harrisburg
Lancaster County, PA — Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capitol Region (BBBSCR) launched a new program with the East Hempfield Police Department and East Hempfield School District called Bigs in Blue.
Four students from grands 2 -5 in the East Hempfield School District were identified to need a little more support coming out of the pandemic.
On Monday, these kids were paired up with an officer to complete a craft. Then moving forward, the officers will meet with the students once a week at school.
Many of the police departments in Central PA are involved with the Bigs in Blue program. BBBSCR has the second largest program in the country.
“This program is so important especially right now to bring together law enforcement and the youth that they serve in the community to build positive experiences and positive relationships,” said Amy Rote, chief executive officer for BBBSCR.
The program is a national initiative to build positive relationships between law enforcement and local communities.
BBBSCR launched the first Bigs in Blue program in 2016. BBBSCR partners with 14 local police departments, including the Pennsylvania State Police.
Through this program law enforcement officers mentor youth in the communities they protect and serve.
