The 2022 Florida Legislative Session which started on January 11 is slated to wrap up on March 11, 2022. One of the bill's which has garnered nationwide attention is known as "Miya's law." It's making its way through the Florida Legislature would require apartment owners to do deep criminal background checks on employees who may enter your apartment. The Senate is backing the bill completely and lawmakers hope it could prevent yet another tragedy, like the one involving Miya Marcano. Investigators say the 19 year old was killed by a maintenance worker who worked with her at an apartment complex in Orlando and had access to her apartment. Investigators say Marcano , a sophomore at Valencia College, was found bound with duct tape in October 2021 in a wooded area near the complex.
"Miya's law" would also add extra documentation about which keys are given out to different people and would extend the amount of time a tenant would be notified, before an employee could enter their apartment. The bill would still need the signature of Governor Ron DeSantis, before it officially becomes a law.
