Boone County residents give back unwanted drugs to law enforcement - krcgtv.com

COLUMBIA—As part of a National Drug Take Back Day, the Boone County Sheriff’s Office coordinated several locations to accept residents’ unwanted prescription drugs across the county.
The events served as a way to safely and efficiently dispose of medications, which can be harmful to the environment and community if not disposed of properly.
“We don’t want people flushing drugs down the toilet and getting into our water,” Marianne Shaw said. She visited Rock Bridge High School in Columbia to dispose of her expired medications.
“I don’t have any children in the house or other people that would take them, but you don’t want anyone taking drugs that are not prescribed just for them,” Barbara Schneider said after dropping. her medications off at Hickman High School.
The Drug Take Back campaign comes days after an emergency city meeting in Columbia to discuss a recent rise in opioid addiction. A health official at that meeting said the county has seen 22 fatal overdoses in 2021.
“We have a huge problem in the community, in every community, now, with drugs and people getting access to drugs that they shouldn’t have,” Barbara Schneider, a woman who dropped her medications off at Hickman High School in Columbia. “So, I think it’s real important that we have this in the community.”
On Saturday, Boone County law enforcement set up drop-off locations at Centralia, Ashland, and Hallsville Police Departments, as well as Hickman and Rock Bridge High Schools in Columbia.
Locations on Friday were set up at the Harry S. Truman V.A. Hospital and the University of Missouri’s Student Center in Columbia.
