EAST COUNTY —

Dozens of law enforcement officers responded Friday afternoon to a rural area near the U.S.-Mexico border after Border Patrol agents “reported shots fired in close proximity to their location,” an agency spokesperson said.

No injuries were reported, and Border Patrol officials did not say whether the agents were believed to be targeted by the gunfire. The area where the incident occurred in Dulzura is near a permanent gun range, and footage from the scene appeared to show at least one makeshift shooting range had also been set up in the area Friday afternoon.

The agents reported the gunfire around 2 p.m., according to the agency spokesperson. Though officials did not say exactly where the incident occurred, emergency radio traffic and footage from the scene indicated responding law enforcement gathered along Marron Valley Road near Donahoe Spur Road, less than a mile southwest of Campo Road.

As law enforcement officers and Border Patrol agents searched the area for the source of the reported gunfire, they came upon a makeshift gun range, according to helicopter footage from 10News. The area is also close to the South Bay Rod & Gun Club.

The Border Patrol spokesperson declined to answer questions about whether nearby shooting ranges may have produced the gunfire the agents heard. The agency said the incident remained under investigation Friday evening.

“Investigators with San Diego Police Department, the FBI and (Custom and Border Protection’s) Office of Professional Responsibility have responded to the scene,” the spokesperson’s statement said. “An investigation into the incident is ongoing. More information will be provided as it becomes available.”

NBC7 reported that agents in the area pulled over several drivers, ordered them out of their vehicles and detained them at gunpoint before releasing them. One man told the television station that agents ordered him out of his SUV and onto his knees, where they placed handcuffs on him. His wrist was left bleeding after they removed the handcuffs and let him ago.

Footage from OnScene TV showed that Chula Vista police, San Diego sheriff’s deputies and personnel from Customs and Border Protection also responded to the incident Friday.
