Brainerd School District announces Friday closure at request of law enforcement - Brainerd Dispatch

News

“Because the safety of our students and staff is our number one priority, Brainerd Public Schools will be closed Friday, December 17, 2021, for all students and staff,” stated Superintendent Laine Larson in an email.

In a late-night email Thursday to Brainerd Public Schools parents, Superintendent Laine Larson announced the district would follow suit with other area schools and close its facilities Friday, Dec. 17, in response to an apparent TikTok trend threatening school violence.

“Because the safety of our students and staff is our number one priority, Brainerd Public Schools will be closed Friday, December 17, 2021, for all students and staff,” stated Larson in the email. “This decision was made at the request of local law enforcement. This is not an E-Learning Day, and there will be no access to our facilities. There will be no before or after-school child care and no extracurricular activities. We will follow up with more information as it is made available.”

School officials in Little Falls, Pierz and Royalton announced Thursday afternoon they planned to close Friday out of an abundance of caution due to potential threats from the video social media platform.

The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office issued a news release Thursday notifying the public of a social media post that may have identified the three districts.

“At this time, we have not been able to identify or verify the specific post or parties who may have been responsible,” the news release stated. “The investigation is ongoing. We are working in partnership with the school districts and all local law enforcement agencies directly impacted.”

Pierz canceled all home after-school activities Thursday night, and Superintendent George Weber wrote in a letter to families that decisions on Friday evening and Saturday events would be made after further consultation with law enforcement.

Little Falls and Royalton canceled all home events and activities for both Thursday and Friday.
