Carbone concludes 31-year law enforcement career, having retired Dec. 12 after 5 years as Barre police chief - Worcester Telegram
BARRE — After five years on the job and a total of 31 years in law enforcement, the town's police chief has retired.
John F. Carbone said he retired effective Dec. 12, and plans to explore private sector jobs and spend time in Florida.
With the Carbone's departure, Deputy Chief James M. Sabourin, will lead the department until Selectmen meet next week to decide who they will name as interim chief.
In a press release from local officials, Carbone was praised for the work he did in Barre.
Carbone was appointed in October 2016, and began working a few months later. Before coming to Barre, he had served as deputy police chief in Clinton, Connecticut, which at that time was a 29-officer force.
He earned a bachelor of science degree in criminology from Florida State University in 1986.
"Chief Carbone has accomplished a great deal during his tenure, including introducing a highly successful School Resource Officer program, improving the professionalism of the department as well as achieving national recognition for the department in the areas of community policing and uniform appearance," the release said.
Carbone said he is most proud of the compliments he's received about the professionalism of the department.
In 2020, the Barre Police were chosen as the Best Dressed Public Safety personnel in the country for departments with fewer than 100 members. The award, from the North-American Association of Uniform Manufacturers & Distributors, is a coveted one.
Carbone said at that time, that professional uniforms are important because they are often the first thing a person sees when dealing with police and providing an air of professionalism is important and "sends a clear message about how the public should expect them to act."
Officials also noted that Carbone created popular town-wide events such as Barre Scary Halloween, a Citizens’ Police Academy and a Students’ Police Academy.
He also added state-of-the-art equipment, a reliable fleet of vehicles and improved training, the officials wrote.
The Police Department operates within its budget and under Carbone's leadership, returned money to the town during the first year of the pandemic, officials said.
Sabourin, who was a candidate for the chief's job in 2016, has said he is still interested in leading the department, and that he learned a great deal working with Carbone.
