Cartwright, law enforcement show support for Pre-K programs and child tax credit in BBB - fox56.com

SCRANTON (WOLF) — Congressman Matt Cartwright and Northeast PA law enforcement released a new report from Fight Crime: Invest in Kids.
The report, titled “Federal Investments in Anti-Poverty and Early Childhood Programs Enhance Public Safety in Pennsylvania,” documents the current federal Build Back Better proposal.
Monday in Scranton, officials said the proposal would expand Pre-Kindergarten access to 200,000 additional Pennsylvania children, while leading to almost $3.7 billion in societal benefits over their lifetimes.
According to Fight Crime:: Invest in Kids, "The report also detailed research showing the impact that the expanded federal Child Tax Credit (CTC) is having on reducing child poverty while improving education and health outcomes for families. Participants called on federal policymakers to take action to boost pre-k availability in the Commonwealth and avoid a lapse in the expanded CTC payment after January 2022. Such a lapse would impact 2.4 million children in Pennsylvania and risk more than 300,000 of those children slipping below or more deeply under the poverty line."
At a press event in Scranton, mayor Paige Cognetti, police chief Leonard Namiotka, Lackawanna County D.A. Mark Powell, along with Cartwright, showed their support for the programs.
“High school graduation is one of the best predictors of whether someone will engage in crime,” Namiotka said. “Research is clear, quality pre-k programs place children on a trajectory of success resulting in better school performance, fewer high school dropouts, and ultimately less crime and incarceration.”
