Chatham County voters, poll workers say first election with new voting law a success - WJCL News

A poll location manager says two people complained about the new voter laws, but mostly no issues.

SAVANNAH, Ga. —

Tuesday's election brought the first major test to Georgia's new voting laws.

“We want to make sure that it’s a good experience that comes to vote. We don’t want anybody to be unhappy with the voting process," said John Leffler, a Chatham County Poll Manager.

Voters and poll workers experienced Georgia's new voting law for the first first time Tuesday.

"These new laws aren’t enacted to hurt anybody. They’ve actually been enacted to protect some voter problems," Leffler said.

I asked voters how has their experience been as a voter in this election.

“Well, this was easy. I mean I did come. There was only one item on the voting list for us. But it’s an important one for me. So I did come to vote," said Crystal Davidina, a Chatham County voter.

"We just walked here. It took two minutes. It was so easy," said Jessie Staley, a Chatham County voter.

The poll manager at the Ardsley Park location says Tuesday's election was a dress rehearsal for 2022.

Some of those changes you'll see are to the absentee voting time, the prevision voter law and the no food and beverage law.

“Generally have a good turn out. We have over 200,000 registered voters here. So yeah, that law could affect people down the line. But it’s just meant for people from being misguided by having free stuff offered to them," Leffler said.

The poll manager said this specific polling place had over 400 people show up to cast their vote, and that’s not including absentee ballots or early voting.

The poll manager says two people complained about the new voter laws, but mostly no issues.
