City, law enforcement find new law banning homeless encampments challenging - KFDM-TV News

Beaumont — A new law banning homeless encampments is presenting a challenge for cities across the state, including Beaumont. With the efforts underway to find a solution to the problem, advocates the new law only worsens the ongoing crisis.

The new law, passed earlier this year, went into effect September 1. It makes camping in unapproved public areas a Class ‘C’ misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $500.

Mike Getz, Beaumont city councilman and Homeless Coalition Chairman, says it’s challenging to enforce for multiple reasons.

KFDM’S Rocio de la Fe has the report.
