Civil rights law group faults ban on Holyoke employees being city councilors - MassLive.com
HOLYOKE — A civil rights group argues that no local or state laws prevent City Councilors-elect Jenny Rivera and Israel Rivera from taking office next week.
That’s been in question since shortly after the November election, when another councilor-elect, Kevin Jourdain, pointed to a 2017 a city ordinance barring municipal employees from serving on the city council.
Both Jenny Rivera and Israel Rivera, no relation, work for the Holyoke Public Schools. Jenny Rivera has said she plans to resign from her school department job before the inauguration Jan. 3, and Israel Rivera has said he may resign from the school department.
