‘Clear violation of international law’: Local lawmakers react to Russian invasion of Ukraine - WTAE Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH —

Local lawmakers reacted to word of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine by releasing statements on social media early Thursday morning.

U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey, a Republican, wrote, "Only bold steps can deter (Russian President Vladimir) Putin from further escalating this war, which is why it’s imperative that the U.S. imposes crippling sanctions on Russia’s financial sector to make them feel the impact of this invasion. Lives are in the balance, and the U.S. must act quickly."

Meanwhile, U.S. Sen. Bob Casey, a Democrat, wrote in part, "This invasion is a clear violation of international law and it's never been more important for democratic leaders to stand together in the face of Putin's aggression."

Casey added, "Our first priority is the safety and security of the American people, especially American troops and Americans in Ukraine, but we will do all that we can to support the Ukrainian people in the face of President Putin's unprovoked attack."
