Representative Mike Hall of Cleveland is advocating to make the punishment for assaulting a law enforcement animal a Class B Felony and why criminal justice students at Cleveland State Community College have come together to start the Joker's Law Petition Project.
"We asked him what we could do and he said that as many signatures that we could collect so that when he takes it to Nashville, he can say, this is what the people wanted. And the people have come forth and said, this is what we want!'" Dawn Carlyle said.
The group spent their Tuesday at the restaurant collecting petition signatures from the community.
Chelsea Mincey said support for Joker reaches far beyond Cleveland, Tennessee.
"We have people reaching out from South Africa supporting Joker's Law. We have people in Florida. It warms your heart to know that there's people backing you," she said.
"When I was in high school, I did a couple ride alongs with his handler and Joker. Joker is an amazing dog. He helps his handler and it's amazing to see everything that he's done. When I first found out he was hurt, I was like, 'Oh my goodness! I know these people,'" she added.
For the rest of this group, it's a real life lesson in the field they aspire to be in.
"This is a really good lesson in victim's advocacy and the whole criminal justice system for us," Carlyle added.
If you would like to sign the petition, the Joker's Law Petition Project will be at El Cazadors Mexican Restaurant at 2299 Keith Street NW, Cleveland, Tennessee until 9:00 Tuesday night.
