Columbus firm Walton + Brown acquires Otto Beatty Jr. law practice - ABC6OnYourSide.com

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — The late Otto Beatty Jr.'s law firm was recently acquired by Columbus-based law firm Walton + Brown, led by partners Sean Walton and Chanda Brown.
Beatty Jr. established his firm in Central Ohio in 1970, and for decades, he fought for civil rights and litigated cases for marginalized communities. He was the first Black lawyer to own a law office in downtown Columbus, and he also argued before the Supreme Court on the landmark case that established the right to bail release. Additionally, he served for 20 years in the Ohio House of Representatives.
Beatty Jr. passed away last March at the age of 81, his wife, U.S. Rep. Joyce Beatty made the announcement. Both of his children, Otto Beatty III and Laurel Beatty, followed his footsteps into the legal profession but were unable to take over the family practice.

Now, the Beatty family has given its blessing to the acquisition. Beatty III said several firms expressed interest in carrying the legacy of the Beatty law firm, but one stood out. The family felt that Walton + Brown embraced the same principles and community spirit as the family practice.
“My father admired Sean and Chanda from afar for several years. He shared with me that he was proud of their accomplishments in both civil rights and protection of injured workers and citizens. He saw much of himself in these young attorneys,” Beatty III said.
Walton and Brown attended school together in Dayton, Ohio, and have known each other for much of their lives. In 2015, Walton + Brown LLP was established with the goal of serving and representing Columbus residents.

“It’s our mission to provide justice for people who have been oppressed and harmed by systems that have historically not worked. It’s a passion we have for people, and a passion to help ensure that they’re able to lead free and happy lives,” Walton said.
The Walton + Brown law offices are located in downtown Columbus. The firm specializes in serious personal injury, automobile accident, wrongful death, medical malpractice, workplace injuries, civil rights and employment discrimination cases.
