Community celebrates law enforcement appreciation week alongside local police - NTV

KEARNEY, Neb. — Showing their appreciation for local law enforcement, numerous people gathered at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds in Kearney for a fun-filled Thursday night.
Thursday's appreciation night was just one of many events happening throughout this week.
“On Monday, law enforcement had lunch with elementary students in their area,” said President of the Kearney Chamber of Commerce, Derek Rusher.
A tour of the law enforcement center happened on Tuesday and on Wednesday, law enforcement had donuts with middle schoolers and high schoolers. This is the first-ever law enforcement appreciation week in Kearney.
Rusher said “Law Enforcement Appreciation Night” was the biggest event of the week, with K-9 introductions, motorcycle demonstrations, bouncy houses, food, and more.
“Appreciation is something I think we all like to have when we do something, and I think, no matter where you work in the workforce, there’s a sense of appreciation that’s needed,” said Kearney resident Tom Henning.
Kearney resident Brandon Benitz added, "in this community, we want to continually reinforce that we appreciate and thank law enforcement for all their many sacrifices."
All the money raised from these events will go towards a law enforcement scholarship at the Kearney Area Community Foundation
“Students will be able to apply to this brand-new scholarship if they’re interested in law enforcement or a related field,” Rusher said.
Deputy Evan Schmidt said it’s awesome to feel that people appreciate their efforts.
“We feel the support thought the community, whether is Kearney, Elm Creek, Gibbon, Pleasant, or Ravenna....it’s been a great week,” Schmidt added.
“Not so much that they appreciate us, it’s more that we can’t work without them,” said K-9 Handler Zach Schwarz. “We rely on the public to call us and give us tips on crimes, or to report crimes so that we can do our job effectively.”
Rusher said that the law enforcement appreciation week will most probably become an annual event in Kearney in the years to come.
