CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. —
A Chambersburg man is back home after flying overseas to rescue his mother-in-law from Ukraine.
Alex Hemeryckx documented his journey on social media and gained the attention of thousands.
Chambersburg man travels thousands of miles to get mother-in-law out of Ukraine
It was a packed house Thursday at his business, the Brussel's Café, as friends, neighbors and strangers held a welcome home party.
Two weeks ago, Hemeryckx flew to Brussels and drove 22 hours straight to the Polish border to get his mother-in-law out of Ukraine.
He wants to do whatever he can to support the country.
"We started making cookies. We decided to make a couple variations of them starting today. We also have T-shirts coming this weekend, macaroons coming out next week in Ukraine colors. All the proceeds will be donated to UNICEF," he said.
Hemeryckx said he's not a hero – he's just a person who did the right thing.
Now he's calling on his community to help him continue to assist the children of Ukraine.
For more on his efforts, go to the Brussel's Café Facebook page.
