County Appoints New Interim Director Of Law Enforcement Oversight Panel - SFGate

Sonoma County Administrator Sheryl Bratton announced this week that attorney Garrick Byers will be appointed to serve as interim director of the Independent Office of Law Enforcement Review and Outreach (IOLERO) beginning next Tuesday, pending board of supervisors' approval.

Byers previously served as a deputy public defender in Fresno, Contra Costa and Solano counties and has been performing audits for IOLERO since September 2021, Sonoma County spokeswoman Sylvia Lemus said. He was also the president of the California Public Defenders Association and served on its legislative and ethics committees.

A permanent search for an IOLERO director will begin in February, Lemus said.

Byers succeeded former IOLERO director Kathleen Navarro, who was recently appointed as Sonoma County Superior Court judge in September.

IOLERO was formed in 2015 by the county Board of Supervisors to monitor the Sheriff's Office by reviewing complaints and making policy recommendations.
