COVID-19 responsible for almost half of year's law enforcement deaths - WCTI12.com

BEAUFORT, Carteret County — COVID-19 is now the leading cause of death among law enforcement officers in 2021, according to a new report.
Nearly half of line-of-duty deaths among officers were related to contracting COVID-19 while on the job, 71 of 155, recorded from January through June of this year.
Captain Joel Marino with the Beaufort Police Department said it's added a different form of anxiety when arriving on a scene or even just helping people in the community.
Unlike their training for other dangerous factors, there's no way to predict when it the threat of the virus is there.
"We don't know, we have no control over how we are getting attacked in the situation and that's disturbing as a police officer. It's very scary," Marino said.
Marino said he encourages everyone to get vaccinated to help protect law enforcement officers as they try to protect local communities.
