Crisis in the Classroom: New law on school textbooks gives Florida parents more control - WEAR
ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. -- Florida House Bill 1467 was filed in January and signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis late last month.
It aims to further strengthen transparency between parents and their child's school in what the governor's office has dubbed "the year of the parent."
"There is a debate in this country about what role parents have in the education of their kids," DeSantis recently said.
The Curriculum Transparency Bill requires Florida school districts to allow parents to examine classroom material like textbooks and other literature -- including every book in the school library.
"Some of the stuff that has ended up there -- incredibly disturbing stuff," DeSantis said. "You have some groups that want to take away classic books like 'To Kill a Mockingbird' but they want things like 'Gender Queer: A Memoir'."
Patty Hightower has been a member of the Escambia County School Board since 2004.
She says the new law may require her district to slightly alter their current policy, but adds Escambia County Schools already implement a strict plan on how material is reviewed.
"We really try very hard to be as transparent as possible," Hightower said. "We have had a policy in the book since before I got on the school board."
