Gates, N.Y. — Republican lawmakers were joined by some members of law enforcement Wednesday to speak out against New York State's Less is More Act.

The critics say they're concerned because they claim a majority of people released are convicted violent offenders.

The new parole reform law is "pro-criminal," said State Senate Minority Leader Rob Ortt.

"We need to be protecting those communities and we're not doing it by flooding the streets with gang members, drug dealers, murderers and people who have committed assault," Ortt said. "That is not the answer to make our communities more just or more safe."

Gates Police Chief James VanBrederode said for every day of the past week, another parolee was released from jail.

Supporters say the parole reform is much needed and that many offenders were thrown back in jail on technical violations, hampering their efforts to rebuild their lives.
