The Metropolitan Police Department says they are "aware of potential First Amendment activities that may take place in the National Capital Region, including Washington, DC, in March."
"At this time, a permit application has not been submitted to MPD. As with all First Amendment demonstrations, MPD will be monitoring, assessing and planning accordingly with our law enforcement partners," MDP said in a statement to 7News.
In preparation, MPD says they "have increased available resources, including the activation of our Civil Disturbance Units."
On Tuesday, D.C. Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton said she will receive a security briefing from the U.S. Capitol Police at her request. Holmes-Norton is concerned that any temporary fencing put up around the Capitol for the trucker protests may become permanent.
“While temporary fencing due to specific and credible threats is a common-sense precaution, I’d like to ensure, even before it is erected, that there are no plans to make the fence permanent,” Holmes-Norton said. “I requested a meeting with Chief Manger to discuss the fencing and other security precautions Capitol Police are taking to keep the Capitol – and D.C. residents – safe from threats related to the trucker convoy and next week’s State of the Union address.”
Holmes-Norton introduced the No Fencing at the United States Capitol Complex Act, which would prohibit permanent fencing on the grounds of the Capitol in February.
Mike Ricci, a spokesman for Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, tweeted a response from the Maryland State Police on Monday, saying MSP is actively coordinating with public safety partners in the region and will be ready to respond.
The U.S. Capitol Police also tells 7News they are "aware of plans for a series of truck convoys arriving in Washington, DC around the time of the State of the Union.'
"As with any demonstration, the USCP will facilitate lawful First Amendment activity. The USCP is closely coordinating with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies, including DC’s Metropolitan Police Department, the United States Park Police, the United States Secret Service and other allied agencies to include the DC National Guard," USCP stated.
According to a release from The People's Convoy, "This convoy is about freedom and unity: the truckers are riding unified across party and state lines and with people of all colors and creeds – Christians, Muslims, Sikhs, Mormons, Agnostics, Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, Native Americans, Republican, Democrats."
