DeSantis signs Stop WOKE Act into law - WESH 2 Orlando

HIALEAH GARDENS, Fla. —

Gov. Ron DeSantis held a press conference in Hialeah Gardens on Friday and signed the Stop Wrongs to Our Kids and Employees Act into law.

The governor said his goal is to block activism like critical race theory from classrooms and workplaces. The Florida Department of Education already banned critical race theory from K-12 public schools last summer at the governor's direction. This new proposal would codify that ban into state law.

"We're here today because we believe in education, not indoctrination," he said.

DeSantis said Floridians deserve to work and go to school free from "oppressive ideologies."

The governor reaffirmed his stance against critical race theory.

"We are not going to use your tax dollars to teach your kids to hate this country or hate each other," he said.

When critical race theory was banned in classrooms last summer, all Central Florida school districts told WESH 2 News that they don't teach critical race theory anyway.

Regardless, the governor has continued to wage a war against the teaching of critical race theory.

DeSantis acknowledged that there were no critical race theory courses being taught in grade schools, but claimed rather that the critical race theory worldview is pervading classrooms and workplaces.

The governor has said the Stop WOKE Act will give parents "private right of action" to sue if they think their kids are being taught critical race theory. It will also allow parents to collect attorney fees if they are successful in their suit.

He called out the Walt Disney Corporation, to booing, for having training for employees that was similar to critical race theory.

Conservative Christopher Rufo was invited to speak, who said Disney's diversity and inclusion program "Reimagine Tomorrow," was racist, and with the signing of the Stop WOKE Act, illegal.

What is critical race theory?

According to The Associated Press, critical race theory is a way of thinking about America’s history through the lens of racism. Scholars developed it during the 1970s and 1980s in response to what they viewed as a lack of racial progress following the civil rights legislation of the 1960s. It centers on the idea that racism is systemic in the nation’s institutions and that they function to maintain the dominance of white people in society.
