Dickinson College to host conversation on guns, law enforcement and the politics of race - PennLive

Jennifer Carlson, an expert on gun issues in America, will discuss the relationship between guns, politics and law enforcement during a presentation at Dickinson.

The event, “Policing the Second Amendment: Guns, Law Enforcement and the Politics of Race,” will take place at 7 p.m. Sept. 29 in the Anita Tuvin Schlechter (ATS) Auditorium, 360 W. Louther St. The event is free and open to the public. Face coverings are required.

Drawing on interviews with nearly 80 police chiefs, Carlson will discuss the paradox of color-blind gun law and racialized gun criminalization. She also identifies two racialized frameworks—gun populism and gun militarism—that are prevalent in decision-making rationales among police, a press release said.

Carlson is an associate professor of sociology and government & public policy at the University of Arizona, where her teaching interests include guns, rights, trauma, justice and law. Her award-winning research examines how guns shape American life, including among gun violence survivors, law enforcement officers, gun sellers and retailers, as well as gun owners and carriers. Her research has been featured by The New York Times, ABC News, NPR and many other news outlets. Carlson’s book, “Policing the Second Amendment: Guns, Law Enforcement and the Politics of Race,” won the 2021 Distinguished Book Award in the Sociology of Law Section from the American Sociological Association, according to a press release.

This event is sponsored by the Clarke Forum for Contemporary Issues and co-sponsored by the departments of political science and sociology and the Women’s and Gender Resource Center. For more information, visit www.clarkeforum.org or call 717-245-1875.
