SELMA — Sunday, a man suspected of murdering two people was shot by Josephine County Sheriff's Deputies after a standoff in Selma that lasted almost an hour.

The Josephine County Sheriff's Office received an eye-witness report of a murder in the 3400 block of Lakeshore Drive and went to the scene supported by troopers from the Oregon State Police.

When they arrived, deputies reportedly found two deceased people in the driveway of a residence and were confronted by an armed man.

Neighbor Kelly Caudle described the scene.

"We heard one single gunshot, and not long after that it was real quiet and the police put up the yellow crime tape. But they stayed all night, and kept the road closed until after dark," she said.

Caudle had a previous relationship with the neighbors, and she said their frequent use of guns became an occasional problem,.

"Not friends, but we knew of them. We'd had an issue where he was target practicing and it was coming up onto our property up here. We had to say, 'You can't do that, we were walking, what if you'd hit one of our animals or us?' He had to be told multiple times not to do this," she said.

Caudle says she's not entirely surprised an incident like this would ultimately take place.

"It's heartbreaking. It doesn't have to come down to guns," she said. "What if he'd come up here running from the cops or shot any number of people? It's scary."

JCSO said the standoff between this man and law enforcement lasted almost an hour.

"This rapidly evolving and dangerous situation escalated to a point where two deputies fired their weapons despite efforts to deescalate the situation," JCSO press release stated.

The deputies on the scene provided first aid to the armed man. The suspect was transported to an area hospital where he remains in stable condition.

JCSO said no deputies were injured in this incident.

The two deputies who fired their weapons have been placed on administrative leave, which JCSO said is standard procedure, adding that the officers will not be identified at this time.

JCSO was assisted by Illinois Valley Fire Department, AMR and Mercy Flights.

The agency said the Josephine County Major Crimes Team is investigating the deaths of the two unidentified victims. The team consists of members from the Grants Pass Police Department, Oregon State Police, Josephine County Sheriff’s Office and Josephine County District Attorney’s Office.

The GPPD will take the lead in reviewing the officer-involved shooting while Oregon State Police will lead the investigation for the two deceased people located at the scene.

All future inquiries should be directed to the Josephine County District Attorney’s Office.
