Dozens of new Arizona laws went into effect - AZFamily

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) — Dozens of new Arizona laws went into effect on Wednesday. Among them, gun shops are now considered essential businesses. Any place that sells guns or ammunition can legally stay open during an emergency. "Now that it is official, I think it is a good thing," said Byron Vaughn, the general manager of MMPGuns.

Meanwhile, there are some new fines for blocking sidewalks. It is now considered a crime even if you partially block a sidewalk with your car. Under a new law, people could be fined $250. The legislation aims to help people who use a wheelchair. "The sidewalk is how we get to the bus stop, and that is how we get to our jobs, and that is how we get to our doctor's appointments. We aren't always just walking the dog and can go another direction," Loren Worthington, vice president of communications at Ability360.

Community colleges can now offer four-year degrees for certain programs. Matt Hasson with Maricopa Community Colleges said the district is still working out the details but it could take two years until students can enroll. "We are looking at things that are in high demand, programs in high demand, like health care, IT, police, fire, science," said Hasson.

Under another new law, people won't lose their driver's license if they don't pay civil fines. Plus, people who get convicted for street racing or reckless driving will have their driver's licenses suspended for one year, instead of getting it revoked.
