Elon Law student wins $25000 scholarship - Today at Elon

A first-generation Elon Law student is among a half dozen winners of a national $25,000 scholarship drawing for her participation in workshops designed to help law students strengthen their personal finances and plan for loan repayments.

A representative of AccessLex Institute, which hosts the MAX by AccessLex personal finance program, surprised Daphne Myers L’23 with the award during a virtual meeting on April 6, 2022.

Myers had been invited to a law school conference room under the pretense of offering feedback about her experience using MAX by AccessLex.

The University of Pittsburgh alumna soon was wiping away tears, joking that she wore the wrong mascara to school and that “this is still the best feedback session I’ve been to!”

“It’s our favorite week of the year where we share this great news,” said Jennifer Schott, managing director of the AccessLex Center for Education and Financial Capability.

AccessLex Institute is a national nonprofit organization that advocates for expanded access and affordability to law school. Its MAX by AccessLes is offered at 180 law school and used by more than 35,000 current students. The program incentivizes participation through scholarship drawings several times per year.

“This is super exciting. I’m a first-generation law student and I’m paying for all of this myself,” Myers said later. “Oh my gosh, it’s going to make a huge difference. $25,000? I’m going to have a heart attack! I just keep shaking!”
