Enforce Crossing Law - The SandPaper
To the Editor:
Attempting to cross the Boulevard is not simply a problem in Ship Bottom. It is a problem throughout the Island and there are no easy solutions, but one comes to mind.
Drivers need to remember that pedestrians in a crosswalk have the right-of-way by law. This means drivers are required to stop while the pedestrian is crossing without exception. This was of paramount importance to know when we studied for our driver’s licenses and during our on-the-road examination. If our police officers started to enforce it more rigorously by issuing summonses, word would spread quickly and the problem would start to diminish.
Unfortunately, it will not solve the problem, but it could be supported by announcements on the mobile sign boards stating that the law is being enforced.
Something needs to change because the attitude of drivers on the Island toward pedestrians is horrible. I’ve had drivers skid to a stop, accelerate to miss me, scream at me and give me the middle finger salute just for trying to cross the Boulevard in a crosswalk. Obviously, there is a really bad understanding of the law.
