ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. -- The Escambia County Sheriff's office is out in force again Monday night.

Deputies aren't writing tickets but are educating bicyclists and pedestrians about safety. Especially if they are out at night.

Escambia County deputies have been out since 5 p.m. Tuesday afternoon passing out bicycle lights and pamphlets.

10 Escambia County deputies gathered in a parking lot along North Davis Monday night to teach safety between Creighton and East Johnson Avenue.

According to the state, the area is in the top 25 in the state for pedestrian and bicycle accidents.

Chris Dryer was the first Monday night to get lights for his bike. He was unaware it's Florida law.

Dryer said he's always been cautious but this is something he says he needs.

Brian Mason also got lucky Monday. Free lights for the back and front of his bike.

"It will help a lot be safer when I'm traveling," Mason said.

Escambia County Sheriff's Office say many accidents occur because bicyclists do not drive in the right lane and have no lights and pedestrians are caught not using a crosswalk to cross the street.

"We're not trying to write tickets, that's what we try to tell people that is not on our agenda for this," deputies said.

Deputies gave out pamphlets to pedestrians like Harold Ogletree.

"I always wear something light where I can be seen, like I got on now," Ogletree said.

Channel 3 met Mary Rollo who was placing flowers near the spot where here friend was killed riding a bicycle six months ago.

"He was going to the store for somebody when he got killed," Rollo said.

The high visibility enforcement, as it is called, will continue through Monday night.
