PORT EWEN, N.Y. — The Esopus Town Board has scheduled a public hearing for Thursday, April 7, on a proposed law that would allow camping at marinas along the Rondout Creek in Connelly.

The hearing s scheduled for 6:45 p.m. at the Town Hall at 1 Town Hall Way.

Officials drafted the regulations after a court ruling last year recommended that the town and Castaways Marina reach an agreement over rules for the use of trailers and mobile campers. Town Board members had contended that Castaways had about 20 recreational vehicles on its property. The marina agreed to pay $7,000 as part of a settlement.

Castaways’ attorney, Milad Boddoohi, said at the time said there had been only five recreational vehicles and one of those was for the property owner.

In a telephone interview Monday, Supervisor Danielle Freer said it was uncertain if the proposed law would help resolve some of the issues that have created problems for the marina’s neighbors.

“I’m interested to hear what the public has to say and I don’t know if it will solve the problem,” she said.

Connelly residents have urged town officials to crack down on speeding and other problems related to the increase in traffic due to an unapproved recreational vehicle park at the marina.

Under the proposed regulations, marinas would be required to get site plan approval and a special use permit. Requirements under the law would include:

• Continuous operation of the campsite between April and Oct. 31, with the permit revoked if the site ceases to operate for more than 30 consecutive days.

• Receive town Planning Board approval for screening for any part of the campsite that is within 50 feet of a property line and visible to neighbors. Screening would have to be no less than 10 feet wide and consist of native vegetation.

• Limiting campsites to 12 sites per acre with a maximum of 15 sites regardless of the property size.

• Campsites would need to be at least 1,250 square feet and have a 5-foot separation between each site.
