The new status means that all EU documents will now be translated into Irish as well as the other 23 working languages of the union. A third of Ireland's population can speak Irish, but only 70,000 use it every day.

Officials took down a temporary European Union flag at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris after it drew fury from conservatives and the far right. The flag was intended to mark the start of France's six-month EU presidency.

EU rules call for the nation where asylum-seekers first enter the bloc to process requests for protection. But most applications in Germany come from people other EU countries failed to register, a media report says.
