Father advocates for Aniah's Law after daughter's recent murder - NBC 15 WPMI
MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. (WPMI) — The father of 18-year-old Jireh Portis is speaking out Monday after his daughter was allegedly killed by her ex-boyfriend who was out on bail for another murder.
Jireh Portis was a great softball player, had a beautiful spirit, and is already deeply missed by her family especially her dad Darrell Portis.
“She was just a ray of light. She was always bubbly. She was a lifelong athlete and an incredible softball player. This has caused a ripple effect across the entire ocean one small ripple has impacted so many lives,” Portis said.
Mobile Police say Jireh was shot Thursday night at an apartment off of Bellingrath Road by her 22-year-old ex-boyfriend Dayvon Bray.
“This was senseless. Murders happen, but when a murder happens and it should’ve been physically impossible to happen that’s what makes it even worse,” Portis said.
Mobile Police say Bray was out on bond for an August 2021 murder in Prichard.
“This man had proven himself to be a flight risk from multiple states in the United States. He was extradited back to Mobile and was granted a nominal bond. I mean nothing. He was granted a nominal bond and we wonder why did the judicial system allow this to happen,” Portis said.
The day after her death the Alabama Supreme Court ruled judges could impose a bond of $1.5 million for those charged with murder.
“I think there were over 130 murder suspects in Mobile County that are on the streets on bond and there’s a propensity for those who are on bond who commit violent crimes to continue to commit violent crimes,” Mobile Police Chief Paul Prine said.
In the last 18 days, 13 people have been shot in the City of Mobile.
Chief Prine says they alone can’t keep violent crime from happening.
“It’s imperative that we have the court system open up. We can’t do this alone. We have to have them move these cases along through the court systems and that cannot be understated,” Chief Prine said.
Another measure, Aniah’s Law, which would allow judges to deny bail for violent offenders altogether, has been passed but has to be ratified by voters this November.
Both had a chance of preventing her death but are too late.
“We must apply pressure to our judicial system. We must let them know that these are sons and daughters that are getting needlessly murdered,” Portis said.
The funeral service for Jireh Portis is this Tuesday at Harvest Church.
