Tallahassee, Fla. — Last week, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) Office of Agricultural Law Enforcement (OALE) arrested a man for knowingly selling stolen property to a pawn shop in Broward County, Florida.

“We’re grateful to our Ag Law officers for conducting a thorough investigation and ensuring that any individual profiting from stolen merchandise will be held accountable.” Commissioner Nikki Fried said. “Our department will continue to investigate anyone selling stolen property, and I hope this arrest will deter future attempts to cash-in on criminal activity.”

Background:

On February 18, 2021, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) Office of Agricultural Law Enforcement (OALE) conducted an investigation at a pawn shop in Margate, Florida. While inside the pawn shop, investigators observed several new, in-box items that appeared to have been stolen from local retailers. Investigators obtained a search warrant and seized dozens of items that had been pawned by multiple individuals. A subsequent investigation revealed that Nicholas C. Bartilotta knowingly sold property that had been stolen from a large national retailer.

On April 7, 2022, acting on information and evidence obtained during the investigation, OALE investigators obtained an arrest warrant from the 17th Judicial Circuit for Bartilotta for the following charges:

  • Arrestee: Nicholas C. Bartilotta of Broward County, Florida

    • Charges: Violation of Section 812.019 (1), Florida Statutes, Dealing in Stolen Property; Second-Degree Felony; 3 counts.

On April 27, 2022, Bartilotta was arrested on the active warrant and booked into the Broward County Jail with a $2,500 bond.

Section 812.019 (1), Florida Statutes states: Any person who traffics in, or endeavors to traffic in, property that he or she knows or should know was stolen shall be guilty of a felony of the second degree, punishable as provided in ss. 775.082, 775.083, and 775.084.
