Fellow SC law enforcement show support after Lake City loses one of their own - wpde.com

FLORENCE, S.C. (WPDE) — Support from the community and first responders was not in short supply Friday morning as they paid their respects to fallen Lake City officer, Lt. John Stewart.

Stewart was killed in the line of duty on Sept. 17.

A friend and former coworker, Chief Alex Edwards, from Hemingway Police Dept. said, “We hate to come together during times like this; you know for this type of occasion, but it’s needed. It’s a constant reminder that some gave some, then some of them made the ultimate sacrifice, they gave all.”

Lt. Stewart gave that ultimate sacrifice when he responded to what would be his last call.

“To know we’re having another funeral for somebody that died in the line of duty trying to do their job- trying to keep the citizens safe," said Chief Edwards.

Being no strangers to losing first responders, Chief Edwards and West Florence fire chief, Howard Worrell, know that when one of their own falls - support will have no limits.

Members of law enforcement from counties, big or small, all over South Carolina came to honor the fallen officer.

“They’ll come from all over to try and help grieve with the family and help show support," Howard said.

Chief Edwards said feeling the support from the community fellow law enforcement has been so comforting.

“To know that we have that support in the law enforcement community no matter what your status is and from the public, you know it just reminds you, ‘oh okay, I know they got my back.," Chief Edwards said.
