Former Portage official to regain law license - Chicago Tribune
Former Portage Clerk-Treasurer Christopher Stidham can resume practicing law again next month after serving a suspension after his conviction on a conflict of interest conviction last year.
Kathryn Dolan, spokeswoman for the Indiana Supreme Court, said Stidham’s license suspension by the court last year included an automatic reinstatement after 180 days.
Stidham, 38, served as clerk-treasurer from 2012 to 2019. He also ran for mayor in 2019. He applied for admission to the Indiana bar in March 2015 and was admitted to practice law in October 2016.
While Stidham served as clerk-treasurer and in the period between his bar application and acceptance, he was engaged in an illegal scheme involving payments to three companies controlled by his then girlfriend, Rachel Glass, who he later married, according to court documents.
On his bar application, the court said Stidham failed to disclose the payments as clerk-treasurer to entities controlled by Glass. That represented a violation of the state’s professional conduct rules.
The criminal conduct came to light in 2019, and Stidham was charged with official misconduct in 2020. He pleaded guilty to an amended charge of felony conflict of interest in 2021 and paid nearly $57,000 in restitution. His wife pleaded guilty in the scheme and was sentenced to four months of probation.
