Fugitive's past reinforces Rock County law enforcement's concerns over present danger - WKOW
ROCK COUNTY (WKOW) - A fugitive's past crimes make members of Rock County's law enforcement community concerned over the present danger he represents.
Milwaukee County Sheriff's officials said Robert Johnson, Jr., 39, escaped from his escorts Tuesday at Milwaukee's General Mitchell International Airport as he was being transferred from custody in Laredo, Texas to Rock County.
Sheriff's officials said the transport of Johnson was being carried out by a private contractor, U.S. Corrections. A company representative has yet to respond to a request for comment on the escape from 27 News. A Wisconsin Department of Corrections official says Johnson overpowered his escorts. Milwaukee County Sheriff's officials say Johnson was last seen wearing a portion of the restraints placed on him for the transfer.
Johnson is on extended supervision after serving prison time for a 2015 armed robbery with the use of force in Janesville. Johnson was being supervised at a Rockford address through agreement between Corrections officials from Wisconsin and Illinois. Officials say Johnson left Rockford without approval and went to Texas, where he was arrested last month.
Johnson is also on Wisconsin's sex offender registry after being convicted of second degree sexual assault of a child in 2004.
Court records show Johnson's 2015 crime involved Johnson and two other men holding a gun to the head of a victim who was beaten and robbed. After the heist, the victim was able to trail the suspects' car.
"He observed one of the persons involved in the armed robbery throwing a firearm from the vehicle," says Janesville Police Lieutenant Joshua Norem.
"Myself and another officer were able to search the area where the victim saw the firearm thrown and were able to recover a firearm," Norem says.
"If that individual is back in our community, we would certainly like to ensure that they find their way into custody," Norem says.
