George Washington University law school receives record gift from Bobby Burchfield - Washington Business Journal - The Business Journals

An alum of George Washington University’s law school has endowed a $4.5 million professorship, the largest faculty gift in the law school’s history.

Bobby Burchfield’s gift through the Burchfield Family Charitable Foundation creates the Burchfield Professorship of First Amendment and Free Speech Law, prompting GW Law to recruit an expert scholar for the position, the university announced Monday.

Dayna Matthew, dean of the law school, said in a statement the gift is "a game-changer" that will allow the school to attract a free speech expert, giving it better footing in First Amendment scholarship.

Burchfield retired last year from King & Spalding LLP, an international law firm based in Atlanta with an office in D.C., and reportedly never lost a jury. During his career, he served as general counsel for former president George H.W. Bush’s reelection campaign; participated in the presidential election recount in Florida in 2000; served as a member of former president George W. Bush’s Antitrust Modernization Commission; and served as independent ethics adviser to the Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust, which held the former president’s business assets.

Burchfield previously endowed a scholarship for students to attend GW Law in 2008. He has served on the dean’s advisory council for GW Law for decades and just finished teaching a free speech seminar at the law school. He graduated in 1979.

“I believe in paying it forward,” Burchfield said in a statement. “Everything is intertwined with free speech. Without it, you can’t have informed and democratic elections, accountability of public officeholders, religious discourse, academic freedom, scientific inquiry, even commerce.”
