SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTGS) — The Supreme Court Thursday blocked President Joe Biden's vaccine requirement aimed at large businesses.

The mandate would have required companies with more than 100 employees to enforce vaccinations or face penalties.

The court ruled six to three to block the mandate that would have affected close to 84 million American workers.

An associate law professor at Georgia Southern University, Joshua Kennedy, said the ruling was determined by reviewing the provisions of the OSHA Act.

"The argument made by the majority of the Supreme Court was essentially that the mandate ran afoul of the Occupational Safety and Health Act, that it did not cover this particular kind of mandate, that it did not give OSHA the right to do this."

Although the court blocked the vaccination mandate for large businesses, the requirement for healthcare workers still stands.

Health officials working in spaces that provide Medicare and Medicaid must still get a COVID-19 vaccination.
